History

The history of Bahamas revolves around what Geography is about. It was in 1942 when Christopher Columbus, the very first European visitor of the island, first stepped on the San Salvador Island located in the eastern part of Bahamas which was called Guanahani by the first settlers in this area. Columbus had observed that the island is surrounded by a shallow sea thereby giving it the name “baja mar” which means shallow water and since then, the island has adopted the name “The Islands of the Shallow Sea” or “The Bahamas”. Because Bahamas was situated near Florida as wells as the different well-travelled shipping channels, Bahamas has caught the attention of settlers, explorers, traders and even invaders. These people who had all been tempted by the island shaped the very colorful and interesting history of Bahamas and had all contributed to what the country is now.

The African Heritage (black) makes up approximately 85% of the population of Bahamas. 2/3 of this population flocks along the Nassau location on the New Providence Island. Bahamans are educated, fluent in speech as well as modern in technology. Majority of the people are Christians making the country a “Christian Country”. The culture has shaped its people to become “relaxed” and tend to have a good time after a hard day’s work. This is their way of rewarding themselves from a job well done. Nassau museum of Pirates offers a walk through interactive activity that has a very realistic recreation of the lives of pirates in the 18th century. You may also visit the wonderful Ardastra Government House, Adrastra Gardens and Zoo that were built in 1737 and don’t miss to visit the Cable beach that is located in west Nassau. Bimini Road is also famous especially for people who love scuba diving because of its underwater limestone structure looks like paving blocks of large road that are located at the end of the Bimini Bay. Crooked island is the second world’s island discovered by Columbus. This beautiful island has a deep cove and great sandy beaches. This place looks like a butterfly and bird’s paradise. It is also recommended that you visit the Bahamas parks such as Inagua National Park, the world’s largest breeding of flamingo. Lucayan National Park that is located in Grand Bahamas Island is also a must visit place. There are also rough looking island like Andros. This is covered with enormous jungle forest and don’t miss the peaceful Sanctuary Bay where you can swim together with the dolphins. This place is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Bahamas.
